Mercy House Youth - Self Titled
I discovered the Mercy House Youth by accident. They were playing at a show I was at recently and I found them to be fresh breath of nostalgia.
They are a Seattle based quartet hanging on to the North West sensibility that grunge will never die. However, their music is more complex than that. Tinny acoustic guitar and echoing Bright Eyes-esque vocals harmoniously intertwine with the deeper, fatter sound of the electric guitar and driving drums.
The music has balance and depth. Each member seems to know their place in the band, allowing each instrument its time to shine while still playing together as a cohesive unit. This came across live as well as on CD. Songs such as “Kill the Shepard”, which sounds like a sea shanty in 3/4 timing, was so gracefully performed that night, it was what inspired me to buy their CD.
Unfortunately for all of you the band is from, as I said, Seattle. So in order to see or hear them your only resource is the good ol’ internet. But hey, you’re online anyways right, I mean you’re reading this aren’t you? So check them out. We’ll see if we can’t convince them to take another stab at the Bay area.
